Description

Italeri Harrier GR.3 ‘Winter Camo’ 1/72 Model Kit

The Italeri Harrier GR.3 ‘Winter Camo’ (91278) is a 1/72 scale plastic model kit depicting the British Hawker Siddeley Harrier GR.3 in a winter camouflage configuration. This version of the famous vertical and short take-off and landing (V/STOL) aircraft was developed from the original Harrier GR.1, incorporating improvements to its ground-attack capabilities while retaining its distinctive vectored-thrust propulsion system.

The completed model measures 19.3 cm and represents an aircraft designed to operate from conventional airfields or improvised forward bases. Its winter camouflage subject reflects the Harrier’s ability to support ground forces in challenging weather and operating conditions.

The Hawker Siddeley Harrier GR.3

The Harrier GR.3 was an improved development of the original Harrier GR.1, retaining the basic airframe and the Rolls-Royce Pegasus turbofan engine. Its defining feature was the ability to direct engine thrust through movable nozzles, allowing the aircraft to perform vertical and short take-offs and landings.

This propulsion arrangement gave the Harrier operational flexibility that conventional jet aircraft could not match. Rather than relying entirely on long, established runways, the aircraft could operate from shorter take-off areas and temporary airfield facilities positioned closer to ground troops.

The GR.3 introduced improvements to the Harrier’s attack capabilities, including a laser rangefinder integrated into the nose. This equipment supported target acquisition and tracking, allowing the aircraft to employ more advanced weapons, including laser-guided armament.

Winter Operations and Forward Airfields

One of the Harrier GR.3’s important operational characteristics was its ability to function from improvised bases in difficult conditions. Temporary airfield infrastructure could be established relatively quickly, allowing aircraft to operate close to potential front lines without depending on permanent military airbases.

This capability was particularly valuable during winter operations, when weather and ground conditions could restrict the use of conventional airfields. The Harrier’s short take-off and vertical landing capabilities offered greater flexibility in selecting operating locations.

The winter camouflage configuration represented by this Italeri kit provides a distinctive appearance for the aircraft, reflecting its suitability for operations in cold-weather environments.

Model Kit Features

Italeri’s 1/72 scale kit captures the characteristic appearance of the Harrier GR.3, including the aircraft’s distinctive nose profile and compact V/STOL fighter design. The winter camouflage subject provides an alternative to the more familiar standard Harrier appearance.

Harrier GR.3 Winter Camouflage Subject

The Harrier’s combination of vectored-thrust propulsion, improved attack equipment and ability to operate from temporary airfields made the GR.3 a distinctive British military aircraft of the Cold War period.

In its winter camouflage configuration, the completed 1/72 scale model represents the Harrier GR.3’s role as a ground-attack aircraft capable of operating close to front-line forces, including from improvised bases established in demanding winter conditions.
