Academy’s 1/48 scale F-4J Phantom represents a US Navy fighter aircraft from VF-84, the ‘Jolly Rogers’. This plastic model kit includes detailed cockpit and landing gear components, engraved surface detail, combat armament and Cartograf decals for finishing the aircraft.
The F-4J Phantom is a distinctive subject for Cold War naval aviation modelling. This release concentrates on the VF-84 Jolly Rogers aircraft, combining the recognisable Phantom design with the squadron’s identity and a selection of details for the completed model.
US Navy VF-84 Jolly Rogers
VF-84, known as the Jolly Rogers, is the US Navy fighter squadron represented by this Academy kit. Its association with the F-4J Phantom makes the aircraft a recognisable subject for modellers interested in American carrier-based fighters and Cold War military aviation.
The F-4J’s fighter configuration is represented alongside a selection of combat weapons. The kit includes both air-to-air and air-to-ground armament, allowing the modeller to work with different types of military aircraft stores during assembly.
Detailed Cockpit and Landing Gear
Academy has included a highly detailed cockpit and landing gear, providing two important areas of interest during construction. The cockpit forms a central part of the aircraft model, while the landing gear contributes to its appearance when displayed on the ground.
Three lifelike pilot figures are included, adding further options for presenting the aircraft and its crew. These figures complement the cockpit detail and provide an additional painting task within the project.
Engraved Surface Detail and Armament
The model features fully engraved panel lines and rivet detail across the aircraft surfaces. These recessed details provide definition to the Phantom’s exterior and can be brought out during painting and weathering.
A selection of air-to-air and air-to-ground combat armament is supplied, giving the model the equipment associated with its military fighter role.

Painting and Finishing
Cartograf decals are included for applying the aircraft’s markings. Together with the engraved panel lines and rivets, these provide the main elements for finishing the model as a VF-84 Jolly Rogers Phantom.
The cockpit, landing gear, pilot figures and external armament offer several separate areas for painting and detailing. Paint and glue are required to complete this 1/48 scale Academy F-4J Phantom model kit.
