History: During the First World War, carrier pigeons played a crucial role in battlefield communication. Units on the front lines often relied on these birds to send vital messages back to headquarters when telegraph or telephone lines were damaged. Each pigeon travelled in a wicker basket to protect it from harm, and thousands of these were in constant use throughout the war. Their speed and reliability saved countless lives and made them an invaluable part of the communication network.
