Description

Academy USAF EC-121 Warning Star 1/144 Model Kit

The Academy EC-121 Warning Star (12637) is a 1/144 scale plastic model kit depicting the US Air Force’s Cold War airborne early warning and electronic reconnaissance aircraft. Based on the Lockheed L-1049 Super Constellation airliner, the Warning Star was adapted for military surveillance duties, with large radar domes mounted above and below its fuselage.

This release is a reboxed Minicraft kit with new decals, providing four USAF marking options covering aircraft from the mid-1950s through to the Vietnam War. The choices include two RC-121 aircraft and two EC-121R aircraft operated from Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base in Thailand.

The Lockheed EC-121 Warning Star

Introduced in 1954, the Warning Star served with both the US Air Force and US Navy during the Cold War. Air Force crews nicknamed the aircraft “Connie”, while Navy personnel knew it as “Willie Victor”, a reference to its original WV designation.

Its most recognisable features were the two large radar domes. A vertical radome above the fuselage and a horizontal radome underneath housed radar equipment capable of detecting aircraft at long distances.

This airborne capability extended the reach of ground-based radar networks, including the Distant Early Warning Line. The EC-121 also performed electronic signals intelligence (SIGINT) duties, gathering information through electronic reconnaissance.

Four USAF Marking Options

Academy’s new decal sheet provides four aircraft identities representing different periods of Warning Star service:

  • USAF RC-121C 51-3836: Hamilton Field, approximately 1955.
  • USAF RC-121D: Late 1950s.
  • USAF EC-121R 67-21487 “Da Nang Glider”: 553rd Reconnaissance Squadron, 553rd Reconnaissance Wing, Korat RTAFB, Thailand, June 1969.
  • USAF EC-121R 67-21498: 553rd Reconnaissance Squadron, 553rd Reconnaissance Wing, Korat RTAFB, Thailand, December 1970.

The marking choices cover both the early Cold War radar aircraft and later reconnaissance operations associated with the Vietnam War.

Cold War and Vietnam War Service

The Warning Star remained operational for more than two decades. During the Vietnam War, the US Air Force employed EC-121 aircraft for electronic reconnaissance, including operations from Thailand.

The aircraft’s airborne surveillance role helped establish the capabilities later associated with Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft, including the Boeing E-3 Sentry.

Most EC-121 aircraft had been retired by 1978, although the US Navy continued operating a specially modified electronic warfare version until 1982.
